Justin Lieberman American, b. 1977
Overview
Justin Lieberman subverts and reframes imagery drawn from media and popular culture to interrogate the hierarchical systems embedded in contemporary life. Throughout his practice, he has repeatedly returned to this strategy, engaging with recognizable structures such as advertising, furniture design, outsider art, home shopping television, art conservation, corporate franchises, and exhibition taxonomies.
Working with readymade images and materials—including newspaper clippings and advertisements—Lieberman alters them through painting, collage, and hybrid processes. His distinctive visual language is informed by ideas of excess and transgression, and is marked by a deliberate preference for the handcrafted over the mass-produced.
Lieberman has exhibited internationally including in Great Britain, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Los Angeles, and New York. His solo exhibitions include 2010 – BFAS Blondeau Fine Art Services, Geneva, Switzerland; PlatYtudes Bernier Eliades, Athens, Greece; Salto Mortale 2009 – Marc Jancou Contemporary New York, USA; The Corrector Custom Pre-Fab House Zach Feuer Gallery, New York, USA; The Corrector in the High Castle. His work is part of the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA USA and the Craig Robins Collection at DACRA, Miami Beach, FL USA.
