George Condo American, b. 1957
George Condo is an American artist best known for his distinctive fusion of European Old Master painting techniques with American pop sensibilities, creating a style he famously dubbed “Artificial Realism.”
Condo’s art offers a multilayered experience that probes the psychological depths of human nature. Through a process of transformation that merges the visual language of art history with contemporary philosophical inquiry, Condo constructs a visceral window into the complexities of the world we inhabit. His paintings confront viewers with distorted yet familiar figures, embodying both the grotesque and the sublime, and inviting reflection on identity, emotion, and the surreal dynamics of modern life.Speaking of Condo’s influence on the generations that have followed him, Laura Hoptman, curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art stated, “George opened the door for artists to use the history of painting in a way that was not appropriation.”
