Jenny Holzer American, b. 1950
Overview
"I wanted to offer content that people—not necessarily art people—could understand". - JENNY HOLZER
Jenny Holzer is an American conceptual and installation artist whose work deploys text in public spaces across an array of media, including electronic signs, carved stone, paintings, billboards, and printed materials. Holzer is known for her provocative use of language in public spaces. Emerging in the late 1970s as part of the New York City art scene, Holzer gained recognition for her text-based works that merge art, politics, and social commentary. Her work explores themes of power, violence, feminism, war, and consumer culture, often using minimalist design to amplify the emotional and political weight of her words. Holzer’s work has been shown in exhibitions worldwide, including Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and Fondation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland.
